GOOD MORNING AND HAPPY FRIDAY!
Great Start for the 2018-2019 School Year- Thanks a ton for your work getting prepared for our students. From my perspective, the first few days have been fantastic!
Fundamental Five- Always Be Closing- Laptop Timer: GHS Teacher, Mr. Kintz, shared this as an alternative for teachers that may not want to use the timer provided at the Fundamental Five workshop. This timer can be downloaded on your laptop and can be used to set multiple alarms and/or have the alarm ring at the same time daily, etc.
Roof Repair for Woodland Elementary and Graham Junior High- In June 2018, the district advertised for bids to replace the roof system at Woodland and to repair a significant portion of the roof at GJHS. The district received very few proposals and none from a vendor with a reputation of performing quality work. As such, we rejected all proposals. It is our understanding that most reputable roofing firms had more work than they can handle and could not meet our needed timeline. The decision was made to locate a vendor who can provide emergency repairs on the type of roof that is currently over the office area at Woodland and to re-advertise for proposals for the original scope of work. The manufacturer of the existing material on Woodland sent a rep on 8-15 to evaluate and begin the emergency repairs. We anticipate the replacement of the Woodland roof and the repair of the GJHS roof to cost approximately $1 million dollars.
Lu Allen Volleyball Tournament- The annual Lu Allen Tournament begins today at GJHS and GHS. It’s always a great tournament! GO LADY BLUES!!!
Steer Football Scrimmage- The Steers will host Burkburnett in a scrimmage this evening. The freshmen will begin at 5:00. The varsity will begin at approximately 7:00 pm. GO STEERS!
Booster Bash- The annual Booster Bash will be held this coming Monday beginning at 7:30 pm at Newton Field.
“SHOOT FOR THE MOON. EVEN IF YOU MISS YOU'LL LAND AMONG THE STARS.” Les Brown
Kris was born in Brownsville, Texas, to a career military man and his wife. Kris’s father eventually reached the rank of Major General in the Air Force. Even as a child, Kris wanted nothing more than to join the military. He was a good boy, an obedient boy; high grades and high achievement.
As Kris entered high school his father was transferred to a base in California. Uh-oh, a high schooler uprooted from friends and familiar routines. Anyone could see trouble coming. But not for Kris. He excelled in California. After high school, Kris continued his success path in college. Football hero, Golden Glove boxing champ, sports writer for the student newspaper, ROTC commander, published author; so many career opportunities available to him, but Kris had a career goal already, remember. He was going to be a military man.
As he was graduating from college, the ultimate prestigious academic recognition was bestowed on Kris, a Rhodes scholarship. So it was off to Oxford. Without resting on his laurels, Kris headed to England, but not before having a novel published. With a second novel in the works, publishers were clamoring for Kris’s manuscripts. While at Oxford, Kris began to dabble in music. First he wrote a few tunes that caught some interest. Soon, he had put together a little band that was gaining popularity with the kids in the area. Graduation day arrived, and the goal Kris set as a boy was still fixed in his mind. Kris joined the U.S. Army.
He went through jump school, Ranger school, and flight school. He was advancing quickly. Stationed in Germany, he became a Major, and soon thereafter a Captain. Then, came the plum assignment of all-time – orders to report to West Point as an instructor! And, Kris broke his father’s heart. He resigned his commission to pursue a songwriting career.
Although that decision led to his family disowning him, Kris Kristofferson didn’t hesitate. He followed a dream that had been brewing for a few years, and became a recognized songwriter, singer, and actor.
While every child in our school may not be as gifted as Kris Kristofferson, each one has the potential to take the gifts he/she does have as far as they will go. Our schools will provide the support, knowledge, and creative opportunities for every child to not only dream big, but to also achieve those dreams. I am confident our staff will provide the “launch pad” for each of our students to shoot for the stars!
