Sleep in The Storm...
There is a story about a farmer who was looking for a hired hand. Desperate, he advertised for help, and for a long time, no one came. Then a raggedy old man staggered up the walk and announced he would like to work. The farmer asked him for a resume; he produced instead a crumpled piece of paper from a pocket with the words: “He sleeps in the storm.” The farmer did not know what this could mean, and tossed it aside, but hired the old man because he really needed some help on the farm.
A few weeks went by, and an awful storm came. Thunder roared, lightning flashed, rain poured down, and the wind blew the trees sideways. The farmer woke up, terrified, and screamed for his hired hand. He didn’t answer.
The farmer ran out to the barn, expecting the worse. But the animals were in their stalls, with feed, and the barn was secure. He ran to the pasture and found the hay baled, bound, and covered in tarps. He ran to the hired hand’s quarters and burst through the doors and found the old man was sound asleep.
It was then that the farmer remembered the piece of paper: “He sleeps in the storm.” And he got it. He realized the old man could sleep in the storm because he had already done everything he was supposed to do, the best he could, before the storm came.
I believe that we can apply this to our work as educators. If we choose to take responsibility. If we remain willing to learn… to plan… to adapt; then when the storms come, we can remain calm and confident serving our children.
We can sleep in the storm!
