September 11, 2001… Where were you?

Tomorrow marks the 20th anniversary of terror attacks that killed 2,996 people at the World Trade Center, Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon. A new generation has grown up over the past two decades with few if any memories of this tragic event.

Do you remember where you were and what you were doing on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, when you heard the news of the terrorist attack?  I was serving as the principal at China Spring High School. I vividly recall entering the office following the passing period between first and second period and Mrs. Halik informing me of a phone call she had just received from her daughter telling her that a plane had just crashed into one of the towers at the World Trade Center. From that point on the remainder of the day had an ominous feeling. We turned off our passing period bells and the students and staff moved about their day in what felt like complete silence. Without verbalizing it, everyone knew what we were experiencing was so much bigger than any one of us individually.

In days following the terrorist attack, emotions ranged from anger… sadness… disbelief… amazement… pride. Yes, pride. Pride in the way we were collectively joined in the spirit of sadness and patriotism in spite of our individual differences.

For those of us who are old enough to remember, 9/11/01 is a day that is impossible to forget. Regardless, it is a day for all to take a moment and remember those who lost their lives in the attack and those who worked as first responders.

Take care of yourself and others!
