Win the Day…make life a masterpiece (excerpt from Win the Day by Mark Batterson
From 1964 to 1975, the UCLA Bruins dominated college basketball, winning ten NCAA national championships. They won seven of those championships in a row! The coach of those teams, John Wooden, ranks as one of the most revered coaches in the history of sports. Those who knew John Wooden would argue that his character off the court was even more impressive than his coaching on it.
Through the ups and downs of life, the wins and the losses, it was a seven-point creed that served as John Wooden’s compass. It was his rule of life. John Wooden’s father introduced him to the creed, but it wasn’t original to Joshua Wooden. He copied the creed from a 1931 interview with Supreme Court Justice John H. Clarke. Wooden’s version looked like this:
Be true to yourself.
Help others.
Make each day your masterpiece.
Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
Make friendship a fine art.
Build a shelter against a rainy day.
Pray for guidance, and count and give thanks for your blessings every day.
What does it mean to make each day a masterpiece? The answer for each person, of course, is as different as each of us. You need to come up with your own answer, and you’ll have different answers during different seasons of life.
If you want to win the day, you’ve got to define the win: What’s important now? This question is a journey, not a destination. Happy traveling1
Have a nice day… take care of yourself and others!
