Advice to Graduating High School Seniors
Life is made up of cycles.  You are finishing one, and about to start another.
I can remember 35 years ago, in May 1982, anticipating graduation and what would come next. I was naively optimistic about my own impending journey toward being the first in my family to earn a college degree.

Key to success (in my opinion):
  • Arrive early…stay late!  A strong work ethic will serve you well.
  • “Yes, ma’am, No ma’am, Yes sir, No sir, Thank you and Please” are some of the most important words in the English language.  Common respect will open doors and provide opportunities!
  • Don’t let your high school years be your best years! Being a grownup, if you do it right, and work at it, is much better than being a teenager.
  • Take risks…don’t be afraid to fail! George Bernard Shaw once said, “A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.”
  • Don’t focus solely on grades. Earning all A’s doesn’t help you much if you can’t make connections to the world around you!
  • Believe in something and take a stand! Passion leads to grit and sacrifice.
  • Give something back! Making a difference in others lives is fulfilling and will make you happy.
  • Lastly, you are not living in the real world unless you are paying your own bills!  Be grateful to those that provide for and assist you on your road to success.  When given the opportunity…pay it forward!

GOOD MORNING AND HAPPY FRIDAY!

The Lady Blues defeated Andrews last night 5-3 in game one of the best of three series! A home run by Nicole King and hard hit balls off of the outfield wall by Sarah Bundrick & Alex Husen in the 5th inning changed the game.  Additionally, Aubree Beggs provided some clutch fielding from her centerfield position.  Emma Southerland got win from the mound.  Game 2 will be played in Snyder on Saturday at 2:00. Game 3, if needed, will be played at 4:00.

Lady Blues Honor Chester Martin! Prior to leaving for the Snyder on Thursday, the Lady Blues softball team honored community member and long time Lady Blues Softball supporter Chester Martin with a special sign, CHESTER’S CHAIR, to mark his permanent reserved seat at the ballpark.

WRITTEN IN STONE

“A TRUE FRIEND IS THE GREATEST OF ALL BLESSINGS” - Unknown

I recently read a story that reads much like an Aesop’s fable. The moral to the story is pretty profound, I think. It goes like this:

Two friends were hiking in the desert. At a point in the trip, they got into an argument and one friend slapped the other one in the face. Immediately, the one who had been slapped dropped to his knees and without saying a word wrote in the sand,TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

They continued hiking until they came upon an oasis. After getting a drink and filling their canteens, the men decided to bathe. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started to drown. His best friend immediately pulled him out of the muck and saved him. After recovering from the near drowning, the rescued man wrote on a stone, TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.

The friend who had first slapped him and then saved his friend’s life asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in sand but now you write on stone. Why?”

The other man replied, “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it. However, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it!”

For educators this time of the year is met with mixed emotions. It’s busy; it’s hectic. We are trying to meet deadlines, and we are trying to wrap-up another school year. Then, one day we come up for air, and we realize that we are faced with saying goodbye to friends and colleagues with whom we have worked. Some are retiring, and others are just moving on to “greener pastures”. Whatever the reason, now is the time to etch those friends’ names in stone so that “no wind can ever erase it”.

This year will mark the retirement of eight members of our education family. As these ladies and gentlemen retire from their positions, we want them to know that by positively touching thousands of lives during their careers, they have ensured that the winds of time will never erase their impact them from memories of their students!

Good luck Micki Bullock, Brad Lang, Michelle McGee, Vanessa Monk, Buddy Moore, Mary Sanders and Tonya Sparks ! We wish each of you the best and we thank you for your service!

Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget!

Always Something To Live For

GOOD MORNING AND HAPPY FRIDAY!

These words come a little harder this week than they do in most others, but… this is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!

Today, I have reversed the order in which I normally share information. To me, it’s the correct perspective.  I hope you agree.

Always Something To Live For

“Never is there something to die for, but always is there something to live for.” Harrison Brown

This week has provided a multitude of opportunities to reflect on so many things. Most, for which, we have no answers.

With that said, several of my beliefs have been even more solidified this week. First and foremost, there are more good people than there are bad! Even though most of the time it does not get celebrated, if we treat others well, have a zeal for life and choose to be happy, we all can make a positive impact on others.

Throughout the week, local and national media have produced segments to spotlight the life of Harrison Brown.  One of my favorites is linked below. Click on the Longhorn logo to view.

There are several opportunities to assist the Harrison Family:

  • T-Shirts at Double R Trading Co in Graham- https://t.co/rQeNsVZ8tH
  • The Brown Family Fund at Ciera Bank of Graham 940-549-2040
  • A Harrison Brown Memorial Scholarship has been established at NCTC of Graham. Donation can be sent to North Central Texas College at 928 Cherry St, Graham TX 76450.

A Rosary service will be held for Harrison at 7:00 this evening at St. Mary’s Church in Graham.

A Memorial Service will be held for Harrison at 1:00 pm on Saturday in the Graham High School Gym.  The Memorial Service will be streamed via the Graham ISD Facebook Page.
