Care Enough to Vote- Make your voice heard about things that matter – register and vote!
Everywhere you turn, voting is being discussed - voting rights, voter integrity, and voter access. It’s no mystery why this topic is so important – because your vote is your voice and by exercising your right to vote, you have a say in how important decisions are made. Through your vote, you choose elected officials from the most local form of government (school boards) all the way up to the highest position on the ballot (governor, this year). The people you choose will make decisions that affect every educator, student, and parent in the state. Your vote is your power, and it is a big deal – if you use it.
Elections are coming. To vote in the March 1, 2022, Primary Election, you must be registered to vote by January 31, 2022.
To Do:
Make sure that you are registered to vote. Check your voter registration status here.
If you have moved recently, you may need to update your registration. Review this checklist to determine if you need to re-register.
If you have other questions about registering and voting, you can find some answers here.
Make sure to watch these League of Women Voters of Texas short videos if you need help.
Going the Second Mile…
In the book THINK AGAIN, the author Adam Grant tells the story of Candice Walker. Ms. Walker worked in the chemotherapy center of the University of Michigan healthcare system. The patients on her floor LOVED Ms. Walker because she saw her mission to be not only protecting the fragile immune systems of the patients but to also care for their fragile emotions. She called her floor the House of Hope!
Many a time, Candice was the first one to console families with coffee and bagels while their loved one went through treatment. She would cheer patients with funny stories of her cats or show them that she had accidentally worn one brown sock and one blue sock that day. One day when the elevator doors opened, a patient was on the elevator floor crying in pain. Others looked at each other unsure of what to do. Not Candice! She immediately put the patient in a wheelchair and rushed her to urgent treatment. Later the lady called Candice “my savior”.
I know that you are thinking that Ms. Walker is only doing the things expected of trained healthcare workers. We all hope that our doctors, nurses, and social workers working in a hospital setting will have the skills and heart that she showed. Here’s the thing: Candice Walker was not a doctor, nor a nurse, nor a social worker. She was a custodian assigned to the chemotherapy center. All of her acts of kindness and quick actions were in addition to her primary mission of keeping the center clean and sterile. Ms. Walker saw her job as going the “second mile” for patients at the center.
I am sure there are hundreds of stories of teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, maintenance personnel, bus drivers in our district who understand that their job is really much more than a job description. What are the stories in our district? I encourage you to share them with me and your colleagues!
