Hornet Friday Message- September 26, 2014

Happy Friday Hornets!

Good luck to all of our Hornets in action today.  Our Hornet Cross Country team is completing at Giddings, our Lady Hornet Volleyball team is at home against A&M Consolidated and our Hornet Football team is at home against A&M Consolidated.  Also, good luck to our HHS Choir students participating in the District Choir Auditions in Conroe on Saturday.

We have had another exciting week in HISD!  Highlights of the week for me included the following:

The Saturday Huntsville Item article about the discipline issues in our district.  Although the story was factually accurate about one in six of our students having received some sort of discipline and I acknowledge that we have challenging issues to address, I choose to be happy about the five of six that pretty much do the right thing without being asked. We must all work together to establish and maintain an environment and culture that is safe and secure for students and staff.  I encourage you to have conversation with your campus administration regarding any concerns you have regarding this subject.

This past Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to watch our Lady Hornet Volleyball team fight back from being down 0-2 in the match against College Station High School to claim victory decidedly in game 5.  Although we did not begin well... we finished strong!  In order to accomplish this task the team maintained composer, were resilient and kept working.  I know that we are teaching these concepts throughout our system.  It's just so awesome when we get to witness it all come together

This week we began conducting Learning Rounds on the campuses of Huntsville High School and Huntsville Elementary School.  I understand our staff being unsure about this new process.  As stated during our Back to School Conference, this collaborative process will allow us to learn about our learning.  Specific concepts on which the groups are focusing on include: Use of routines and procedures; Positive dialogue; Use of 10-2 learning; Students involved in meaningful, critical thinking activities; Students demonstrating understanding; Students talking to students. Below I have linked two articles about the learning rounds process for your review.  If you have questions regarding this practice, please talk with your campus administration.
