TOY GLOBE LESSON

A father brought home a children’s toy globe of the earth for his young son. The boy was fascinated by it and spent the entire evening excitedly talking to his father about continents and oceans, the North Pole/South Pole, and all the rest. When it was bedtime, and as the youngster was settling under the covers, the father picked up the globe and began tip-toeing out of the bedroom. The little boy, not quite asleep, saw what was happening and whispered to his father, "What are you going to do with my world?"

The unspoken question from every child to each one of us is: "What are you going to do with my world?" As educators, I hope we are doing everything we can to empower them to make it better!

Demanding Not Demeaning
(Excerpt from 24/7: The First Person You Must Lead is YOU. by retired Brig. Gen. Rebecca “Becky” Halstead)

While commanding in Germany, I experienced one of the lowest moments in my military career. After 24 years of experience, and one as a one-star general, I found myself questioning my leadership capacity -- until I realized that attitude was self-destructive. I needed to trust my ability to lead myself through the situation.

Just a month before we deployed, my boss, a three-star general, made an unannounced field visit to one of my units to observe their training and readiness for deployment. When he arrived they were packing up their gear. Their exercise had ended.

Furious with what he witnessed, he immediately ordered me to his office in Heidelberg. When I reported, he pulled an envelope out of his bottom desk drawer, threw the contents on the table, pounded his fist on the packet, and said, “This is what is going to happen to your units in Iraq. I have no confidence in your ability to lead in combat.”

I couldn’t breathe. Did he really just say that?

“If you think that unit is trained and certified, you are wrong. You will retrain and recertify all your battalion headquarters and come back to me with a plan to do so.”

My head spun as I tried to grasp the gravity of the situation. Thoughts raced through my head. “We are within months of deploying. Is there enough time? How will I resource this?”

Time spent defending the fairness of his review would have been wasted. I needed to focus on resolving his perceived training gap, making certain my units were fully prepared.

This situation taught me not to lead others the way this leader led me, and to avoid being intimidating or threatening to those I led. I was reminded that leaders should be demanding, not demeaning.

Think Differently

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet.
He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help."
There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat.
He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.
He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up.  A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.
That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.
The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning?  What did you write?"
The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way."
I wrote: "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it."
Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind.
The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind.
Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?
Moral of the Story:  Be thankful for what you have.  Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling.  And even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason behind it!!!
I hope that each of you have a restful and enjoyable Spring Break!

Good Ideas Aren’t Always Unique
Innovation is challenging. Especially if you feel held back by that old saying, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” But marketing expert Seth Godin says there’s more to innovation that a unique idea. He offers the safety pin as an example.
When Walter Hunt patented the first safety pin in the 19th century, the device was reminiscent of a fibula -- used by the ancient Romans to fasten their togas shut. Many would-be inventors might have said of the safety pin, “Why should I bother with this? It’s already been done.”
But not Hunt. And rightly so, says Godin, who reminds contemporary inventors and innovators that nearly anything you can dream up has a strike against it.
“It’s either already been done or it’s never been done, “ he writes on his blog. “Ignore both conditions. Pushing an idea through the dip of acceptance is far more valuable than inventing something that’s never existed… and then walking away from it.”
