Unlearning to Learn

So what is the value of unlearning? The most obvious benefit is recognizing and stopping the stifling mindset that is manifested unintentionally when we feel we know. It’s the ‘this is how I or we’ve always done it’ syndrome. The ability to rid yourself of old ideas that are no longer relevant is valuable as you plow into the future. Unlearning (and then learning something new) helps to keep us innovative, relevant and valuable.
The video titled the The Backwards Brain Bicycle provides insight into the difficulty of unlearning something as simple as riding a bike.
Riding a bicycle is a life skill we learn as kids that sticks with us for a lifetime. Once you learn it, you never forget it. But what if there was a special kind of bike that will make everything you learned useless?
You may think that I am talking nonsense, but there is actually a bike that nobody can ride unless they unlearn riding a bike. Watch the video and you’ll understand.

We Are All Teachers
“If we don’t model what we teach, then we are teaching something else.”

If kids see us… we are teachers!  Anytime we come in contact with young people we automatically become a teacher.  Regardless of how we treat others be it with respect, dignity, rudeness, mockery, etc. we are teaching those that see us.  We may be teaching what is right and we may be teaching what is wrong, but there is no question that… we are teaching.

With this in mind, make the choice to be a positive light. Through our choices we can show the young people we work with that is possible to be in control of how we feel, act and treat others. Without your example, many of them will never know it is a possibility to live their lives differently.

The American’s Creed
In 1917, William Tyler Page of Maryland won a nationwide contest.  The U.S. House of Representatives accepted the statement as the American’s Creed on April 3, 1918.  Its two paragraphs remind us that responsibilities are the source of rights. It deserves to be read and recited.  Especially during these tumultuous political times!
I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

Avoiding Herd Thinking
In case you haven’t watched television lately or you haven’t  “connected’ with your “friends” via social media there is an election scheduled for November 8, 2016.  The media (print, broadcast and social) provide stumbling blocks for our thinking.  Remember, there is no such thing as an unbiased article in a newspaper or an objective sound bite on television news. Reporter, editors and producers are experts at getting us to believe what they say and to adopt their point of view.
Most of us, most of the time, are very binary and immediate in our judgments. We immediately classify items as good or bad, true or false, etc. Three pitfalls to effective leadership linked to binary thinking include:
1.    The decision maker forms opinions before it is necessary to do so, and in the process closes his/her mind to facts and arguments that may be brought forward.
2.    The flip-flopping perception. Quickly making a decision based on the initial information received and then changing the decision based on subsequent details provides the perception that the leader believes the last thing they heard from the last person they talked to.  This is counterproductive for the leader and the organization.
3.    The perception of going along to get along.  Human nature leads us conform to others.
Effective leadership requires one to be able to realize the shades of gray in order to avoid the pitfall of herd thinking. Imperative to this is the ability to avoid forming an opinion about an important issue until all of the facts have been revealed and all arguments have been heard. This can be quite complex, as it requires you to embrace opposing thoughts as the same time- think- decide.
Whatever you do, don’t be like the subjects in this video… think for yourself!
