In the  Spirit of Thanksgiving...

There are a lot of myths around the first American Thanksgiving in 1621, but one thing is for sure. The Pilgrims were lucky to be alive, and they knew it. “Eleven months earlier the Pilgrims had arrived at the tip of Cape Cod, fearful and uninformed,” says Nathaniel Philbrick in his book, “Mayflower. By all rights, none of the Pilgrims should have emerged from the first winter alive. But they did. With the strength of their faith, and help from many Native Americans, they did more than survive.... they began to flourish… they were thankful!

I challenge each of you to think of someone you consider to be really happy. Do they smile more than others you know? Do they laugh more than others you know? Does being in their presence make you happier? What makes this person different? In my opinion, this occurs in large part due to one's ability to be grateful and express gratitude. Let’s face it, bad things happen to all of us... it is not what happens to us that matters, it is our reaction to it. I hope you each take the time over this Thanksgiving Break to pause and consider what you are grateful for. May we all strive to have an attitude of gratitude!

I hope you each have a wonderful, safe, and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Thirteen Folds… More than Pomp and Circumstance

Most Americans have seen the traditional folding of the American flag, at specific events, such as funerals. Have you ever wondered why Old Glory is folded that specific way? Much more than just pomp and circumstance, each of the 13 folds holds special meaning.

Have you ever noticed that the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the United States of America Flag 13 times?  You probably thought it was to symbolize the original 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day!

The 1st fold of the flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of the belief in eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing the ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of the country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents the weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in the time of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to the country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, 'Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong.'

The 6th fold is for where people's hearts lie.  It is with their heart that they pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to its Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that they protect their country and their flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of their republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood and Mothers.  For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty, and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of their country since they were firstborn.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.

The 13th fold, or when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding them of our national motto, 'In God We Trust.'

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for them the rights, privileges, and freedoms they enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you'll see flags folded and now you will know why.

Have a nice day...take care of yourself and others!

People Have Diverse Value…Look Deep

As a young boy, I was a fan of the 1960’s television show, Gomer Pyle USMC.  I saw Gomer Pyle as a goofball who seemed to mess up nearly every task he was issued. He was a walking disaster area.  However, somehow in the end everything always came out OK.

From 1964 thru 1969 it was filmed and set in California, it stars Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle, a naïve but good-natured gas station attendant from the town of Mayberry, North Carolina, who enlists in the United States Marine Corps.  Frank Sutton plays Gomer's high-octane, short-fused Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter.  Gomer Pyle was a "deep escapist" show; it avoided political commentary and offered viewers a distraction from the social changes of the 1960s.  Despite being a military-themed show and airing during the peak of the Vietnam War, the show never discussed the war.   Instead, the show was founded on "Gomer's innocent simplicity [and] Sergeant Carter's frustration and later concern for Gomer's well-being."

As I enjoyed watching the silly show, I never sought to know what the real Jim Nabors was really like.  I assumed he was the same gangly misfit in adult life… I assume many others viewed him the same way.  The episode titled “The Show Must Go On” aired, in which he sang “The Impossible Dream (The Quest)” in Washington, D.C., at the U. S. Navy relief show, accompanied by the Marine Corps Band was eye-opening. To see individuals beyond their “outer shell” and deeper than their surface image aides in the realization that people are more complex than what may be observed in a causal superficial relationship.  If you want to know and appreciate others, then you must devote a little time & energy to get beyond your initial impression.

Have a nice day and a grand weekend…take care of yourself and others!
