Long Live the Differences- Steer Nation Message 1-27-23

GOOD MORNING & HAPPY FRIDAY!

2023-2024 Calendar Update- The GISD Calendar Committee met on Thursday, January 26th. During the meeting, the group reviewed calendars from districts that have recently made the decision to move a 4-Day instructional calendar. Additionally, they review the Q&A document that has been prepared to address the question raised during the recent campus staff meeting. The committee decided to narrow the calendar choices from three to two for staff, parent, and community voting. Once Mr. Loomis has completed the  “cleaning up” of the final two selections, the superintendent will send them out for voting.

Long Live the Differences….

Gillian is a seven-year-old girl who cannot sit in school. She continually gets up, gets distracted, flies with thoughts, and doesn't follow lessons. Her teachers worry about her, punish her, scold her, and reward her the few times that she is attentive, but nothing. Gillian does not know how to sit and cannot be attentive.

When she comes home, her mother punishes her too. So not only does Gillian have bad grades and punishment at school, but she also suffers from them at home.

One day, Gillian's mother is called to the school. The lady, sad as someone waiting for bad news, takes her hand and goes to the interview room. The teachers speak of illness, of an obvious disorder. Maybe it's hyperactivity or maybe she needs medication.

During the interview, an old teacher arrives who knows the little girl. He asks all the adults, mother, and colleagues, to follow him into an adjoining room from where she can still be seen. As he leaves, he tells Gillian that they will be back soon and turns on an old radio with music.

As the girl is alone in the room, she immediately gets up and begins to move up and down chasing the music in the air with her feet and her heart. The teacher smiles as the colleagues and the mother look at him between confusion and compassion, as is often done with the old. So he says: "See? Gillian is not sick, Gillian is a dancer!"

He recommends that her mother take her to a dance class and that her colleagues make her dance from time to time. She attends her first lesson and when she gets home, she tells her mother: "Everyone is like me, no one can sit there!"

In 1981, after a career as a dancer, opening her own dance academy and receiving international recognition for her art, Gillian Lynne became the choreographer of the musical "Cats."

Hopefully, all “different” children find adults capable of welcoming them for who they are and not for what they lack.

Have a nice day…Take care of yourself and others!

Boot Struggles… Attitude

Miss Jones was helping one of her kindergarten students put his boots on. Jake had asked for help, and she could see why. With her pulling and him pushing, the boots still didn’t want to go on. When the second boot was on, she had worked up quite a sweat. She almost whimpered when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” Miss Jones looked, and sure enough, they were.

It wasn’t any easier putting the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as, together; they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet.

Jake then announced, “These aren’t my boots.” She bit her tongue and thought “Why didn’t you say so?” Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off. He then said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My mom made me wear them.”

Miss Jones didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. She mustered up the grace to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Finally, that task was accomplished, and she asked him, “Now where are your mittens?”

Jake said, “I stuffed them in the toes of my boots.”

Have a nice day unless you have chosen otherwise!

Clean Your Windows- Steer Nation Message 1-6-23

GOOD MORNING…HAPPY NEW YEAR & HAPPY FRIDAY!

Solar Project- You may have read the recent articles in the Graham Leader about the decisions of the district regarding a proposed solar project (Texas Tax Code Chapter 313 Value Limitation) within the boundaries of Graham ISD. The consideration of this project began in August 2022 and was communicated via our monthly Board Agendas, Board Briefs, and Board Minutes as well as being reported in the Graham Leader. Information regarding the Chapter 313 Value Limitation program can be located on the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts website. The Comptroller's Office did not complete the required process to approve all of the timely filed applications by the December 31, 2022 deadline. At this time, it will take action of the Texas Legislature to authorize the Comptroller’s Office to complete this statutory requirement.

Several have asked me about the financial implications for the school district for a potential project such as this. The district uses the Moak Casey firm to provide financial analysis for these projects. Here is a copy of the financial summary document containing the estimated financial impact for Graham ISD for this potential project. Per the conditionally approved agreement, the project would provide an estimated $8,250,608.00 in extra funds without any loss of regular state M&O revenue. Additionally, the project would be a full value for I&S taxes.

PLEASE NOTE- Regardless of the Chapter 313 agreement, the company could decide to move forward with constructing the solar project. The implications for the district would be increased local values resulting in an increase in local tax funding and a corresponding reduction in state funding; full value for the I&S taxes, and the loss of the extra funds of $8,250,608.00.

Lady Blues Soccer- Good luck at the Springtown/Weatherford Tournament!

Graham Steer Soccer- The Steers will be in Fort Worth this afternoon vs Castleberry. GO STEERS!

Graham Steer Basketball- The Steers will be at home this evening vs Wichita Falls High School. The varsity contest will begin at approximately 7:00 pm.

Clean Your Windows…

1950’s “Old School Story”, with current day point:

"A young couple moved into a new house. The next morning while they were eating breakfast, the young woman saw her neighbor hanging the washing outside.

"That laundry is not very clean; she doesn’t know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better soap powder.

Her husband looked on, remaining silent.

Every time her neighbor hung her washing out to dry, the young woman made the same comments.

A week later, the woman was surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and said to her husband, "Look, she’s finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this?"

The husband replied, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows."

And so, it is with life… What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look. So don’t be too quick to judge others, especially if your perspective of life is clouded by anger, jealousy, negativity, or unfulfilled desires.

Have a nice day…take care of yourself and others!
