In the Spirit of Thanksgiving...

I encourage each of you to think of someone who makes you really happy. Do they make you smile even when you don’t want to? Do they make you laugh? Does being in their presence give you peace? Have you taken the time to tell them, call them or send them a text letting them know how thankful you are for having them in your life?

If not, what are you waiting for?

I hope you each have a wonderful, safe, and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Maturity is...

Maturity is the ability to control anger and settle differences without violence or destruction.

Maturity is patience. It is the willingness to pass up immediate pleasure in favor of the long-term gain.

Maturity is perseverance, the ability to sweat out a project or a situation in spite of heavy opposition and discouraging set-backs.

Maturity is the capacity to face unpleasantness and frustration, discomfort and defeat, without complaint or collapse.

Maturity is humility. It is being big enough to say, "I was wrong." And, when right, the mature person need not experience the satisfaction of saying, "I told you so."

Maturity is the ability to make a decision and stand by it. The immature spend their lives exploring endless possibilities; then they do nothing.

Maturity means dependability, keeping one's word, coming through in a crisis. The immature are masters of the alibi. They are the confused and the disorganized. Their lives are a maze of broken promises, former friends, unfinished business, and good intentions that somehow never materialize.

Maturity is the art of living in peace with that which we cannot change, the courage to change that which should be changed -- and the wisdom to know the difference.

Be Thankful… Be Humble… Be Careful

Some time ago, I read "Quiet Strength" which was written by Tony Dungy former NFL coach and Super Bowl champion.  It's a marvelous book filled with important life lessons. I believe even readers who have nominal interest in football find it to be a worthy read. “Quiet Strength” certainly makes clear the powerful and positive impact of a great, faithful, wise father such as Dungy had. “How did your venting improve the situation?” Tony’s dad asked quietly after young Tony had exploded. “You can’t always control circumstances. However, you can always control your attitude, approach, and response. Your options are to complain or to look ahead and figure out how to make the situation better” (p. 16). In “Quiet Strength,” you get several of Dungy’s great insights on leadership from Nehemiah and David and other biblical texts. A lot of Dungy’s leadership emphasis is on character and culture: get those right and the rest will follow.

Coach Dungy credits his Christian faith and many people who uplifted him along the way.  One was his high school coach, Dave Driscoll, who provided many admonitions, including:  "Talent is God-given, be thankful; Praise is man-given, be humble; Conceit is self-given, be careful."

Have a nice day and a grand weekend!
