The Deadline to Register to Vote is January 31- Everywhere you turn, voting is being discussed - voting rights, voter integrity, and voter access. It’s no mystery why this topic is so important – because your vote is your voice and by exercising your right to vote, you have a say in how important decisions are made. Through your vote, you choose elected officials from the most local form of government (school boards) all the way up to the highest position on the ballot (governor, this year). The people you choose will make decisions that affect every educator, student, and parent in the state. Your vote is your power, and it is a big deal – if you use it.

Elections are coming.  To vote in the March 1, 2022, Primary Election, you must be registered to vote by January 31, 2022.

To Do:

  1. Make sure that you are registered to vote. Check your voter registration status here.

  2. If you have moved recently, you may need to update your registration. Review this checklist to determine if you need to re-register.

  3. If you need to register to vote, you can get started here.

  4. If you have other questions about registering and voting, you can find some answers here.

  5. Make sure to watch these League of Women Voters of Texas short videos if you need help.

The Way to Success…

A man is on a walkabout searching for his pass to success. Along the way, he meets a guru on the road and asks, “Which way is success?” The berobed, bearded sage speaks not but points to a place off in this distance.

The man, thrilled by the prospect of quick and easy success, rushes off in the appropriate direction. Suddenly, there comes a loud “Splat!!!”

Eventually, the man limps back, tattered and stunned, assuming that he must have misinterpreted the message. He repeats his question to the guru, who again points silently in the same direction.

The man obediently walks off once more. This time the splat is deafening, and when the man crawls back, he is bloody, broken, tattered, and irate. “I asked you which way to success,” he screams at the guru. “I followed the direction you indicated and all I got was splatted! No more pointing! Talk!!!”

Only then does the guru speak, and what he says is this; “Success is that way. Just a little after the splat.”

I am not sure about success being just a little after the splat.  Over the past two years, I have personally witnessed success in spite of and during the “splat”.

BIG APPRECIATION for team GISD for how they continually have an “onward through the fog” mentality and remain steadfast in serving the students and community of Graham!

Going the Second Mile…

In the book THINK AGAIN, the author Adam Grant tells the story of Candice Walker. Ms. Walker worked in the chemotherapy center of the University of Michigan healthcare system. The patients on her floor LOVED Ms. Walker because she saw her mission to be not only protecting the fragile immune systems of the patients but to also care for their fragile emotions. She called her floor the House of Hope!

Many a time, Candice was the first one to console families with coffee and bagels while their loved one went through treatment. She would cheer patients with funny stories of her cats or show them that she had accidentally worn one brown sock and one blue sock that day. One day when the elevator doors opened, a patient was on the elevator floor crying in pain. Others looked at each other unsure of what to do. Not Candice! She immediately put the patient in a wheelchair and rushed her to urgent treatment. Later the lady called Candice “my savior”.

I know that you are thinking that Ms. Walker is only doing the things expected of trained healthcare workers. We all hope that our doctors, nurses, and social workers working in a hospital setting will have the skills and heart that she showed. Here’s the thing: Candice Walker was not a doctor, nor a nurse, nor a social worker. She was a custodian assigned to the chemotherapy center. All of her acts of kindness and quick actions were in addition to her primary mission of keeping the center clean and sterile. Ms. Walker saw her job as going the “second mile” for patients at the center.

I am sure there are hundreds of stories of teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, maintenance personnel, bus drivers in our district who understand that their job is really much more than a job description. What are the stories in our district? I encourage you to share them with me and your colleagues!

Elections are coming.  To vote in the March 1, 2022, Primary Election, you must be registered to vote by January 31, 2022. Some states make it super easy to vote, through automatic voter registration, online voter registration, and Election Day registration at the polls. Unfortunately, some states make it a little harder and put up some extra hoops. In fact, that is what much of the discussion out there is about. Texas educators are tough and won’t be deterred easily. We will register; we will research candidates; and we will vote! As the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday approaches, we remember his wise words, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

More TIPS For a Great 2022…

  • Spend some time alone.  Constant socializing can be draining.

  • Open your mind to change, but don’t let new ideas dilute your principles.

  • Live an honorable life.  When you get older, you’ll be glad you did.

  • Judge your success by what you had to give up getting it.

  • Remember that not getting what you want may be the best thing that never happened to you.

  • Never interrupt when you are being flattered.

  • Mind your own business.

  • Trust in God but lock your car.

TIPS For a Great 2022…

Happy New Year! Regardless of whether you are a “resolution person”, I encourage you to reflect and adopt one or more of these simple tips to a great beginning of 2022.

  • Say, “Bless you,” when you hear someone sneeze.

  • Don’t let a little squabble damage a good friendship.

  • When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

  • Smile when picking up the phone.  The caller will hear it in your voice.

  • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

  • Read more books and watch less TV.

  •  In disagreements with loved ones, deal with the current situation.  Don’t bring up the past.

  • Never laugh at anyone’s dreams.  People who don’t have dreams will never accomplish much.

  • Never let your mouth get ahead of your head.
