Humble Spirit
The renowned African-American educator Booker T. Washington exemplified the humble spirit. One day as Professor Washington was walking to work at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama he passed the mansion of a wealthy woman. Not knowing him by sight, she asked if he would like to earn a few dollars by chopping wood for her. Without hesitation, Washington peeled off his jacket and went to work. He not only cut a large pile of wood, but he also carried the logs into the house and stacked them by the fireplace.
After Mr. Washington left, a servant whispered to the woman, “I know you did not recognize him, but that man is Mr. Booker T. Washington, the professor at the Tuskegee Institute.”  The next day the embarrassed woman went to Professor Washington’s office and apologized profusely. He replied, “It’s perfectly all right, Madam. Occasionally I enjoy a little manual labor. Besides, it’s always a delight to do something for a friend.”
Not long afterward the woman showed her admiration by persuading some wealthy acquaintances to join her in donating thousands of dollars to the Tuskegee Institute.
“Living is the art of loving.
Loving is the art of caring.
Caring is the art of sharing.
If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.”
Booker T. Washington,
(slave, educator, author)
(1856-1915)
