Keep Calm and Eat Popcorn…

Recently Barry Haenisch of the Texas Association of Community Schools shared an interesting article about popcorn. It was a short article filled with interesting facts. For instance, did you know that…

  • Popcorn was first “discovered” around 5,000 B.C.?

  • It didn’t make it to America until the 1820s?

  • It wasn’t until 1848 that the word popcorn first appeared in a dictionary?

  • Initially, theater owners resisted selling popcorn in theaters, and it wasn’t until the Great Depression that movie theaters and popcorn were forever connected?

All of the information in the short article was news to me, but of course, I immediately had a real hankering for some popcorn. Now that I’m older and lazy, I don’t even pop my own popcorn anymore.
After discovering Chaos Movie Buttered Popcorn pre-popped and in a stay-fresh-bag, now all I need are scissors to enjoy the treat…and enjoy I did!

I was surprised when I continued to read about popcorn to discover that a lot of research has been done about the people who consume popcorn and the way they consume it. It has been discovered that the manner in which a person eats popcorn reveals more about the person’s personality traits than they suspected. In fact, as a school leader charged with hiring the best staff available, who would have thought eating popcorn with a person might be a better hiring tool than all of the inventories and interview questioning in the world?

Try these research facts on for size:
  • 48% of introverts are “popcorn pickers” who eat their popcorn one kernel at a time.

  • 40% of popcorn eaters admit to mindlessly consuming the snack by the handful. Personality-wise the “grabbers” tend to be extroverts who also enjoy sharing their popcorn with others.

  • Perfectionists were found to be a mix of “grabbers” and “pickers”, and they were least likely to be selfish with over 98% willing to share popcorn.

  • Slower eaters, it was discovered, tend to prefer routines and can be stubborn.

  • Fast eaters are generally less selfish, put others first, and are more extroverted.

As we are in the midst of “hiring season”, I wonder if it may be more effective to take prospective new employees to a movie theater and share a bag of popcorn instead of using our existing screening and interview process. :)

The researcher did warn, however, that we might want to take the results of this survey with a grain of salt -or butter if you are feeling adventurous!

Have a great Spring Break!
